Sometimes, after an initial meeting, I might propose that parent work could be the most effective way to think about a child or young person’s difficulties. At other times, parents may approach directly, wanting to learn more about their child or young person, or gain some tools to better understand the way that their child or young person communicates.
Parents may want help with a particular stage of development. Children pass through many different stages on their way to adulthood, and each stage presents unique challenges. Working with a therapist who can have an overview of family dynamics, the emotional impact of experiences or events on the family, and a broader understanding of child development can be helpful. Reaching out does not mean that you are failing as a parent! Parenting is a long journey and life-events, disruptions and changes in the family can all cause moments where help might be needed.
The work may be short or longer-term, in-person or online.
